North Carolina quarter honors the โ€œFirst Flightโ€ (120 feet in 12 seconds) taken at Kitty Hawk by the Wright Brothers on December 17th, 1903. The airplane shown is the original โ€œFlyerโ€ used by the Wright Brothers. At that time, who could have imagined the role aviation would play in the world today.

In the 2001 New York Quarter, the Statue of Liberty is set in front of the state outline showing the Hudson River and Erie Canal. The 11 stars signify New York as the 11th state to enter the Union. The inscription โ€œGateway to Freedomโ€ reflect the hopes and dreams of the many immigrants who passed through the New York harbor. For all these new Americans, their descendants and most of us, the Statue of Liberty is an inspirational symbol.

Over the map is a Zia sun sign, a circle with four points radiating from it in four directions, representing prosperity and happiness. The 1999 New Jersey Quarter features a rendering of George Washington crossing the Delaware River. The design is based on the 1851 painting by Emmanuel Leutze which hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Underneath, the words โ€œCrossroads of the Revolutionโ€ are printed. The Commemorative Coin Design Commission selected the design by unanimous vote.

It also includes the stateโ€™s motto and nine stars that signify New Hampshireโ€™s entrance into the Union.
