The South Dakota Quarter design elegantly combines different aspects of the stateโs history and heritage. Mount Rushmore stands at the center, surrounded by two shafts of wheat and the state bird, the Chinese ring-necked pheasant. Pheasants were introduced to the state from China in 1908, to help promote tourism.

Rhode Island became the 13th state to enter the union on May 29, 1790. A fitting design for the Ocean State, the Rhode Island quarter has a vintage sailboat sailing in front of the Pell Bridge in Narragansett Bay. It is estimated that Narragansett Indians numbered about seven thousand when the first European settlers arrived in Rhode Island.

The Puerto Rico Quarter features a sentry box, symbolizing Puerto Ricoโs strength and solitude. The official flower, the Puerto Rican Hibiscus, is shown as well as the inscription โIsla del Encanto,โ which translates to โThe Island of Enchantment.โ

Pennsylvania became the 2nd state to enter the union on December 12, 1787. The 1999 Pennsylvania Quarter features an outline of the state, the state motto, a keystone, and the โCommonwealthโ statue, a bronze 14โฒ 6โณ female form which has topped the capital dome since 1905. The design was chosen to educate people about the founding principals of Pennsylvania.
