The Maine Quarter showcases Maineโs heritage as a coastal state. It features a lighthouse on a rocky shoreline and a schooner at sail. The design of the lighthouse is based on the Pemiquid Light, which was built in 1835 and is still in active use. The schooner, modeled after the Victory Chimes, represents the recreational and tourist vessels that still sail Maineโs waters.

Louisiana became the 18th state to enter the union on April 30, 1812. In 1803, Napoleon offered the entire Louisiana Territory for sale to America. The United States accepted the offer, which came to be known as the Louisiana Purchase. The Louisiana quarter design celebrates the Louisiana Purchase, as well as honoring the Brown Pelican and Louisianaโs musical heritage.

Kentucky became the 15th state to enter the union on June 1, 1792. Kentucky is known for its thoroughbred racehorses, which is symbolized by the horse standing in front of the House on Federal Hill where Stephen Collins Foster wrote the song โMy Old Kentucky Homeโ in 1853.

Kansas let its high school students choose the final design for the 2005 Kansas Quarter, which is the first to feature both the state flower and the state animal. The sunflower is one of more than 1,800 wildflowers that grow in Kansas. The bison featured in the design required a few alterations to make sure its horns point in the right direction. The bison was chosen as the Kansas state animal in 1955.

โFoundation In Educationโ is the theme of the Iowa Quarter, which is based on the painting Arbor Day by Iowa native Grant Wood. A trio of students and their teacher plant a tree before their one-room schoolhouse, symbolizing the stateโs long-standing commitment to education, respect for the environment and dedication to growth and opportunity in the future.
