El Yunque National Forest was first established as a national site on January 17, 1903. Located in Puerto Rico, the forest is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. A small forest, just 28,000-acres, with great biodiversity. The reverse of the quarter depicts a Coqui tree frog sitting on a leaf and a Puerto Rican parrot (highly endangered) behind an epiphyte plant with tropical flora in the background.
